“All registered dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians.”
To call yourself an RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist), you must have earned a bachelor’s degree that is approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. Moreover, a supervised practicum at a healthcare center, community center or agency, or food service corporation must be completed. Finally, after completing the required practicum hours and coursework to earn a bachelor’s degree, an RDN must pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration must be passed. As with any healthcare professional, continued education courses are mandatory to maintain this title.
As of 2024, anyone who wants to be an RDN must continue their studies and earn a master’s degree in a field approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Council. These fields include food and nutrition sciences, food service systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry.
Working with a registered dietitian for fertility, prenatal, breastfeeding, and post-natal care is important to ensure you receive evidence-based, up-to-date information to optimize your and your baby’s health.
Conversely, anybody can call themselves a “nutritionist”. “Nutritionists” are often people who have completed an online course, gone to a conference, and have not gone through the coursework and requirements to achieve an RDN. Nutritionists are often free from government regulation, which means fad diets, pop culture tendencies, and quick fixes can be part of their repertoire. This, in regular circumstances, can do more harm than good, not creating sustainable, meaningful lifestyle changes. In such a critical time in a woman’s life and baby’s development, seeing a nutritionist is not advisable — for the mother and baby’s health.
This is a moment in your life when the right food choices matter more than they did before. When choosing a prenatal nutritionist, ask for credentials. Don’t be fooled by the name. “Nutritionist” is not a professional title.
